How Much Electricity Does a Red Light Panel Use?

Last updated

A red light panel costs very little to run: at €0.25 per kWh, a 10-minute daily session costs about €0.11 a month for a 90 W panel, €0.57 for a 455 W panel and €1.13 for a 900 W panel. The formula is watts × minutes ÷ 60 ÷ 1000 = kWh, then kWh × your electricity price.

Running cost table

Based on Rubrawell rated power (manufacturer data): Desk about 90 W, Half about 455 W, Full about 900 W. "ct" = euro cents.

Paying more per kWh? Germany's average household price was about €0.37 per kWh in 2026 (BDEW). Multiply the €0.25 column by 1.48.

The formula

  1. kWh = watts × minutes ÷ 60 ÷ 1000. Example: 455 W × 10 min ÷ 60 ÷ 1000 = 0.076 kWh.
  2. Cost = kWh × price per kWh. Example: 0.076 × €0.25 = €0.019, about 1.9 cents.
  3. Per month = cost per session × sessions. 30 daily sessions = about €0.57.

"1000 W class" is not what the panel draws

Many panels are named by a "W class" that adds up the maximum rating of every LED, not the power the panel actually pulls from the wall. Examples from public data (October 2026):

Panel Marketing or rated figure Real draw Source
RedThera RP1000 "1000 W" about 300 W ±5% (LED rating vs real stated by brand) redthera
Mito Red Light MitoPRO 1500X 445 W rated 418.7 W measured (ISO/IEC 17025 lab) mitoredlight
Mito Red Light MitoPRO 1500+ 375 W rated 373.2 W measured mitoredlight

Rubrawell's figures (90 / 455 / 900 W) are the manufacturer's rated power. Real draw at the wall may be lower. We will measure each size with a plug-in power meter and publish the result on this page.

Does more watts mean more light?

Not directly. Watts measure electrical power in. Light out depends on LED efficiency, the share of each wavelength and the lenses. Irradiance at your distance, in mW/cm², is the number that describes the light reaching you. See solar meter vs spectrometer.

Questions

How much does it cost to run a red light panel?
Very little. At €0.25 per kWh, 10 minutes a day costs about €0.11 a month for a 90 W panel, €0.57 for 455 W and €1.13 for 900 W.
How much does one session cost?
At €0.25 per kWh and 10 minutes: about 0.4 cents (90 W), 1.9 cents (455 W) or 3.8 cents (900 W).
Does a "1500 W" red light panel use 1,500 W?
Usually not. The name often adds up maximum LED ratings. Real wall draw is typically a fraction of it; check the brand's measured or rated input power.
How much power does the Rubrawell Full use?
Its rated power is about 900 W (manufacturer data). We will publish measured wall-plug watts once tested.
Can I run a red light panel on a normal socket?
A standard EU household socket supplies up to about 3,680 W (16 A at 230 V), well above the rated 900 W of the Rubrawell Full. Avoid daisy-chained power strips with other heavy appliances.
Is the running cost higher in Germany?
Proportionally, yes. At about €0.37 per kWh (BDEW 2026), 10 minutes a day on a 900 W panel costs about €1.67 a month.
